Siem Reap is the gateway to the temple complex of Angkor and no trip to Cambodia is complete without seeing the world famous Angkor Wat Temple one of the most magnificent architectural wonders worldwide. The temples of Angkor, since 1992 UNESCO World Heritage site, are spread out in an area of over 300 km2 but the most significant ones are just a few minutes out of Siem Reap town. Beside Angkor Wat also Angkor Thom the last capital of the Khmer Empire, the Bayon temple with its giant stone faces or the Jungle Temple Ta Prohm is a must in any itinerary. Siem Reap offers a wide range of accommodation from cheap guesthouses to luxury hotels, a great selection of restaurants, plenty of bars and good souvenir shopping. With its relaxing atmosphere, artistic scene and several excursions beside the temples like a boat tour to the floating villages on the great Tonle Sap Lake or a horse ride to the countryside Siem Reap is a pleasant place to stay for a little while.
The country’s second largest city Battambang is located at the Sangker River just southwest of the great Tonle Sap Lake. Battambang is a lovely, rural, still a bit sleepy town and home to some of the best preserved colonial architecture. Surrounded by a picturesque countryside with rice paddy fields, beautiful Khmer houses and extremely friendly and welcoming villagers it offers visitors a glance of traditional Khmer life. With its fertile soils the region is often referred as the rice bowl Cambodia’s, where even a vineyard can be found.
The Cambodian capital Phnom Penh is with 2 million inhabitants the largest city in the Kingdom and also its commercial, economic and political hub. Characterised by its unique location at the confluence of the rivers Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac, its colonial villas, boulevards lined with trees, art-deco architecture combined with local traditions, Phnom Penh still has kept its original charm. Nowadays it is hard to imagine that this lively Asian capital was unoccupied for several years after the invasion and evacuation by the Khmer Rouge in April 1975. Due to the central location Phnom Penh also is a gateway to Cambodia's tourist attractions. The temples of Ankgor in the western part of the country, the beaches and islands in the south or the national parks in the north-east can be reached overland within a few hours.
